Why Does My Child Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Although your child’s jaw may still be developing, there are a number of reasons why our team may recommend early orthodontic intervention. At their bi-annual checkups, we’ll screen your child for potential concerns and may recommend orthodontics in Orlando if:
- There’s not enough room for their erupting teeth, which would lead to crowding and spacing issues in the future.
- A tooth has fallen out prematurely, which would cause their surrounding teeth to shift to fill the space. Ultimately, this would make the permanent teeth grow in crooked.
- Their bite is visibly uneven. Our team could guide their jaw growth as their mouth is still developing for less of a chance of needing more extensive intervention down the road.
Don’t fret if we do bring up pediatric orthodontics during your child’s routine checkups! You can count on our team explaining why it’s necessary and answering any of your questions you may have to provide you with some context and clarity!
When Should My Child Be Screened for Orthodontic Treatment?

As your child’s smile develops, our team can screen them for orthodontic concerns during their routine, six-month checkups with Dr. Nabi. We’ll examine the alignment of their teeth and bite and review their regular X-rays to determine the risk of your child experiencing more serious orthodontic concerns down the road.
Types of Orthodontic Treatment

Pediatric orthodontics is an all-encompassing term that we use to describe a number of treatments, like braces, space maintainers, and even expanders. The unique intervention needed for your child will depend on what issues they face. For example, if there’s a high chance that their crowding could become worse as their teeth continue to erupt into their mouth, we may recommend braces. If the underlying issue for this crowding is because of having too narrow of a palate, we may recommend expanders. We’ll always recommend the treatment method that would be best for your child.
Are Braces & Lip/Tongue Tie Treatment Related?

Did you know that untreated lip and tongue ties can have orthodontic consequences too? When the frenum, or the small strip of tissue that connects your child’s lips to your gums or the tongue to the floor of their mouth, is overgrown or too thick, it can result in bite problems, gaps between teeth, and misalignment. By treating these issues alongside each other, our team can address all of your child’s dental concerns in one place by providing them with a frenectomy, treating the underlying problem, as well as orthodontics to address other concerns that may have arisen due to the lip or tongue tie.
